About the Hijri (Islamic) calendar
The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar of 12 months, each 29 or 30 days long, so a Hijri year is about 354 or 355 days. The months are Muharram, Safar, Rabiʻ al-awwal, Rabiʻ al-thani, Jumada al-ula, Jumada al-akhirah, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qadah and Dhu al-Hijjah. Years are counted from the Hijra, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad to Medina, in 622 CE, and are marked AH.
This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia. Edit the Hijri day, month or year and the Gregorian date updates. The page also shows the same date in other calendars, such as the Hebrew and Persian.
Common questions
How do I convert a Gregorian date to Hijri?
Choose the date in the Gregorian box, or press Show today. The Hijri card shows the matching day, month and year in AH.
What is today’s date in the Hijri calendar?
It is shown in the line at the top of the converter and updates each day.
How do I convert a Hijri date to Gregorian?
Pick the Hijri day, month and year in the Hijri card. The Gregorian date changes to match.
Why can the Hijri date differ by a day?
Umm al-Qura is calculated in advance. Many communities start a month when the new moon is sighted, so local dates for Ramadan and Eid can differ by a day.
Why does Ramadan move each year?
A Hijri year is about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year, so Hijri dates fall about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year.
